2008 BANK OF AMERICA STUDY OF HIGH NET WORTH PHILANTHROPY”

Wealthy donors are increasingly relying on accountants, attorneys and financial advisors to provide charitable giving advice, and while tax benefits are an important reason for choosing a giving vehicle, the majority would not change their giving levels even if they no longer received a charitable deduction.

These are just some of the findings from the 2008 Bank of America Study of High Net Worth Philanthropy.  The recently released study, authored by the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, provides unique new insights into the demographic and psychographic factors driving family philanthropy, volunteerism, and charitable giving motivations and expectations.

Representative of responses from nearly 700 high net worth households throughout the United States, the study’s findings provide new insights into how, when, why, and to what extent wealthy donors rely upon advisors to support their charitable giving.  Specifically, the study’s findings provide a wealth of new data on motivations for charitable giving by wealthy donors, their use of different giving vehicles, and their utilization of professional advisors to support philanthropy.
